Today whilst aimlessly browsing the internet I came across a snippet of information that shocked me.
Looking up Warren hens initially I inevitably ended up looking up rescue hens and felt guilty that when in France our language skills were not up to acquiring Factory birds.
It’s a lot easier in the market to buy, as they are there to sell, and its obvious you are there to buy, yes; the international language of money.
Now the fact that shocked on this website was a warning not to give a perch to rescue birds as the jump down from a perch of just a foot high can sometimes break legs as one poor owner discovered. Turns out poor diet in these factory farms gives some of the old bird’s osteoporosis.
It makes me so angry, that we allow creatures to be treated that way, but it also made me angry with my self.
You see a few years back some animal activist’s stole a woman’s dead body, there was a great deal made of it in the press, and I thought something at the time that I never said
In a nut shell it was this, cruelty to animals is offensive to me, it sickens me, angers me,
And I put more value in a living animal than a dead human being. I would like to think most people would agree with me.
What these activists attempted however, was to make peoples beliefs clash almost in a display of performance art.
How naive!
They said by this act ‘if you ignore my most profound beliefs, we will ignore yours’
But what a strange set of beliefs people seem to have, these days.
The papers are up in arms if little dead Johnny comes home from hospital with an organ missing, but does society believe we must go to the grave whole to be ready for resurrection.
Some do have this belief I am sure but not the majority, so who is the media being indignant for.
I think the answer lies in the fact that papers are just advertising space for hire at the end of the day, and the company they keep are all about telling you how special you are.
Yes YOU go on treat yourself, after all your special and it doesn’t stop when you’re dead.
So stop sucking up newspapers and remind us what we believe in just once and a while.
Just to be clear, I am quite prepared to put my dead carcase to good use.
I sometimes joke with my wife that a shallow grave will do in the back garden, but leave my bum sticking out the top so visitors have got somewhere to park their bikes.
Perhaps a little plaque that simply states
Arnold the end.

I’m pleased to learn you’re bike friendly!
We’ve had a few run-ins with the animal rights brigade as we not only keep animals for food, but are completely unrepentant and unapologetic about it. As far as they’re concerned, that makes us far worse than the typical consumer as they can be saved — we can’t.
Never mind that our animal are well looked after, extensively reared, and very definitely happy. And never mind that most consumers are eating intensively reared animals in conditions that are just within legal minimums.
No, we’re evil personified as we made a very deliberate choice to keep, kill and eat animals, albeit it in the best conditions we could provide.
For a taster of their views have a look at
Annoying the radical vegans – again
Take a chill pill

My whole family is vegetarian/vegan – It’s wonderful! When we were omnivores – we took turns getting sick (constantly) – Thank goodness those days are over – Been cold/flu free for 5 years now…. Not to mention the energy I have since eliminating milk/dairy from my diet – they were poisioning me (and putting on lots of pounds too)….. Between the horrors at factory farms and cruelties in slaughterhouses….. I can’t see how anyone can support buying animal “foods”. Not a pleasant subject…..
The whole issue of eating animals does not stand up to logical analysis which is why I, like most people, I suspect, try not to think about it. Neither a moral or very commendable thing, really…
*steps in and opens can of worms*
Oscarandre- if you consider the human dental formation, our digestive tract and enzymes and the position of the eyes on our head, I think you will find that humans eating meat is actually quite logical!
IMHO the biggest problems associated with meat eating are the damage that an exponentially expanding population incurs on the environment simply to retain a market of traditional meats (fowl, sheep, cattle etc.) OR the inhumane conditions that result in the attempted reversal of environmental damage, such as the intensive methods of cattle farming employed in developed Asian countries and America, and the atrocious conditions fowl are kept in.
Personally, I believe that logic is deified when people prop up the pharmaceutical industry by requiring dietary supplements when they could simply enjoy a balanced diet!
Oh, and soy farming actually does as much longterm damage to the environment as cattle- betcha didn’t know that!!!
The best bet (again IMHO) is to support a meat industry that utilises creatures endemic to your region- for example, I am in Australia, and the only meat I generally eat is kangaroo- there are a number of reasons for this, which I won’t go into, as this quick thought has kinda turned into a rant… BUT humans eating meat DEFINITLEY NOT DEFY LOGIC!
I don’t know if I would want to park my bike there – but it’s a great idea!!
As for me – it’s burn and pitch and have a good stiff drink afterwards … I’m gone – what do I care?
I’d like to ask most animal activists what they eat for dinner. It kills me how many ‘concerned’ or ‘aware’ people NEVER or RARELY consider the animal we eat on a daily basis when being an ‘activist’.
See my post: A pig and a poke for an exploration of the issues: http://howlingduckranch.wordpress.com/2008/10/14/a-pig-in-a-poke/
In a town in British Columbia they are presently ‘culling’ a bunch of wild rabbits. The animal activists are in an uproar about the issue. Naturally, they think the ‘poor rabbits’ shouldn’t be killed. I say, if indeed they are the scourge the city is claiming, then for the love of god, feed people with them!
Here I am desperately looking for some breeding rabbits to raise for meat. I can’t find ANY to buy, and I live in British Columbia! Ironic eh.
